Statped disseminates knowledge and skills about equal, adapted and inclusive training. Statped is an agency that provides special educational services nationwide, to both municipalities (nursery, school, PPT) and county municipalities (secondary education, adult education), as well as to individuals. The competence pledge, which lasts until 2024, changes Statped's mission. From 2025, Statped will offer specialized expertise where children and pupils have major and complex difficulties.

Statped's social mandate is to contribute to ensuring that children, young people and adults with special educational needs can be active participants in education, work and social life on an equal basis with others. The goal is good and organized training and satisfactory learning outcomes that lead to mastery.

Statped offers special educational services for

  • children, young people and adults (individual-based services/for individuals)
  • kindergartens, schools and professionals (system-based services)

The individual-based services are

  • Instant offer
    Information and guidance for both parents and surrounding authorities, in the event of newly discovered severe sensory loss, acquired brain damage or combined vision and hearing loss and deafblindness. These are most often referred from healthcare institutions. 
  •  Investigation
    If the municipality lacks expertise, it can apply to Statped for help through the investigation.
  •  Advice and guidance:
    Statped will contribute to changes and improvements in educational practice through advice and guidance to municipalities and county councils with kindergartens, schools and PPT. The aim is to contribute to raising competence in the municipality.
  • Courses for parents, family and children
    Statped offers courses for parents and other close people, and for certain groups of children, in language difficulties, communication, hearing and sight loss, upon application from municipalities and county councils. PPT can apply.
  • Course for professionals
    Statped offers courses for PPT, school teachers, kindergarten teachers and other professionals upon application from municipalities and county councils. PPT can apply.
  •  Course for parents/children/professional staff
    Statped offers i.a. school preparatory courses for children with severe visual impairment/blindness, training for parents with deafblind children and NMT (Norwegian spoken language with sign support).
  • Full-time education for students with congenital deafblindness
    Statped has an offer for primary and secondary school for pupils with congenital deafblindness at the Diamanten school for those born deafblind in Oslo.
  • Part-time education for hearing-impaired primary school pupils
    For students who have training in sign language and who want to benefit from a sign language learning environment.

Statped also collaborates with universities and colleges, and contributes to research projects at home and abroad, further and further education, internships, lectures and supervision of master's students.
